Reflecting on National Truth and Reconciliation Day 2022

Friday, September 30, 2022, will mark Canada’s second Truth and Reconciliation Day. The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. It’s a day to listen and explore the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and stories of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Special Update // Serious Inclement Weather Forecast – Sept 22, 2022

Hurricane Fiona is expected to merge with a trough and transform into a hurricane force post tropical cyclone on Saturday. The combination of Fiona and the trough will produce very heavy rain beginning Friday afternoon with the heaviest rain overnight into Saturday. Flooding and washed out roads are likely in some areas.

Due to the impending weather of Hurricane Fiona and subsequent safety of our members, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the CANS 160th Annual General Meeting.

Strong to severe wind gusts are expected to begin impacting the region on Friday peaking on Saturday. Past storms of this nature have produced prolonged utility outages and structural damage. Buildings under construction will be particularly vulnerable.

Release // CAF-FCA Launches Enhanced Program under Canadian Apprenticeship Service

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF-FCA) and its partners – the Canadian Construction Association, Aboriginal Apprenticeship Board, Apprenticesearch.com, BuildForce Canada and SkillPlan launched their Canadian Apprenticeship Service program, distributing grants to employers who hire Level one apprentices.

This announcement has generated questions from our members, so we wanted to provide additional clarification as well as CANS plans for the holiday. First and foremost, CANS offices will remain open on September 19, 2022.

CANSnet Project Preview // NS22-1555 – Corridor Community Options for Adults (CCOA) – New Building

The new 17,569 square foot building, scheduled to open in 2023, will create a more accessible and efficient space for the organization’s vocational and day programming, including three social enterprises that provide training environments for participants. It will also allow them to better serve their growing customer base with room to accommodate up to 125 clients.

Resource // Register for a Pilot Project of Online Silica Control Tool

The tool was designed in partnership with Worksafe BC and BCCSA in 2017 to comply with Silica Monitoring Regulations in British Columbia. The tool is to be set to be available for CSNS in early 2023

News // Planning Begins for Net-Zero Burnside Transit Centre

On September 6, the province announced it is $7.1 million as part of a $20.8-million investment in the planning and design of a new Burnside Transit Centre in Dartmouth.
