CANSWorks program prepares adult learners to earn high school diploma
and work in construction trades industry
Halifax, NS – (14/01/2015) On January 26, adult learners will have the opportunity to earn the credits required to complete their grade 12 and the skills needed to work in a variety of construction jobs and entry level positions, thanks to a new initiative called CANSWorks, an adult learning program offered by NSCC.
“The construction industry is demanding and it is important that companies have motivated and skilled employees trained on a variety of tasks at the work site,” says Duncan Williams, president of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia. “Participants in the CANSWorks Program will learn the most up-to-date safety skills and fundamental construction trade skills needed to be successful in the construction industry.”
As part of the program, participants will complete up to a 24-week work placement and will gain the essential hands-on trade skills and work experience required to get a job in commercial construction trades.
“The opportunity the participants have through the CANSWorks Program is tremendous,” says Matt Brunt, division manager of Bird-Stairs. “It will provide them with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to be successful and make direct connections in the construction industry.”
This CANSWorks Program is a partnership between the Construction Association of Nova Scotia, Department of Labour and Advanced Education, the Nova Scotia School of Adult Learning and NSCC.
“The CANSWorks initiative is a program that our construction industry can fully endorse. The training these participants will receive puts them in the top tier of new hires for construction opportunities, an industry that is constantly striving to find competent and motivated individuals,” says Dave Wilson, president of Wilcraft Concrete Services Ltd. “This partnership between CANS and NSCC is a great template for placing people on a satisfying career path in a diverse and challenging industry.”
