University of King’s College Plans to Redevelop Campus with New Gym and Residence

Project Highlights:

Owner: University of King’s College

Architect: Diamond Schmitt in collaboration with Abbott Brown

About the project:

The University of King’s College has announced its plan to build a new 140,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility to replace the current King’s gym.

The plan includes a new fitness/wellness centre with a new full-sized gymnasium, a state of the art hub for the school of journalism, writing and publishing, approximately 287 new beds to address student housing needs and some community support spaces aimed at improving accessibility and diversity with dedicated spaces for collaborating with Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian communities.

The university has stated that the final building could be as high as nine storeys, with estimated costs between $75 and $85 million (which is subject to change). Tendering is set to take place in the summer of 2027 with construction and commissioning to be completed around September of 2029.
